Tue 13 Jan & Wed 14 Jan 2026 || InnovaLab
ConScience is focused on research integrity and research ethics – with talks and an exhibition of work by students of the Masters in Cognitive Sciences: Cognition and the Mind.
Whether you are an experienced researcher, an early career researcher (PhD candidate or postdoc), a Masters or undergraduate student, or are a non-academic member of the public – how well research is conducted and what ethical principles it upholds and adheres to is important to all of us! Join us for two days of lectures, workshops, a student project gallery, and activities designed to make you think about and question scientific research in a new way.
All activities are free and conducted in English. Note that we are an international study programme and that we value diversity and inclusion.
Coffee, cold drinks, and snacks will be provided at the event.
InnovaLab is the new pavillion built next to the Science and Technology park building on the campus. Further details about the space can be found on its homepage
To help us prepare ConScience 2026, we welcome expressions of interest.

13.30 - 14.00 | InnovaLab Talk to be live screened Dr. Henry Legg [University of St. Andrews] In February 2025 Microsoft Quantum published a paper in Nature claiming to have realised a new state of matter and, based on this, that they had purportedly built a topological qubit (“Majorana 1”). This claim appeared in the New York Times, BBC, and Guardian (amongst others). In this talk I will outline how I had highlighted issues with Microsoft Quantum’s research to both the authors and journals before publication. I will discuss how these problems were ignored and, in some cases, publishers actively modified their policies to allow publication of Microsoft Quantum’s research without releasing data. I will give an overview of the effort required to counter incorrect scientific claims and the implications for reproducibility in natural sciences.
